Jasmine is a stunning, fragrant climber that thrives in warm to mild climates. With the right support and a little care, you can train it into a lush, structured feature for fences or walls.
☀️ Ideal Conditions
Jasmine prefers full sun but will tolerate light shade. A popular variety is Chinese Star Jasmine—an evergreen vine that provides year-round greenery and bursts of scented white flowers in summer. It also trains beautifully into a tidy, full shape.
🧱 Choosing the Right Support
Star Jasmine climbs by twining, so it needs something slender to grip—wires are ideal, while traditional trellis tends to be too thick.

📐 Spacing & Layout
-
Diamond spacing of around 600mm (24") works well for most setups, but you can adjust this based on the area and how much time you want to spend training.
-
For quicker coverage, plant vines 750mm (30") apart.
-
If you're happy to wait a little longer, 1 to 1.15m (3' to 3.5') spacing also works well.
✂️ How and When to Prune
Pruning is key to shaping a tidy and full vine.
-
Late winter: Cut back to the second leaf joint from the main stem to encourage dense growth before spring.
-
1 month after flowering: Lightly prune again. This is the time to select and guide the longer tendrils that will become part of your main structure. Tie them gently along the wires to maintain shape and direction.
Training jasmine takes a little effort up front, but once established, it becomes a show-stopping, fragrant wall of greenery that’s easy to manage year-round.
